Houston boasts a lot of companies that send workers overseas with the oil and gas industries. A quick look in Google will show you how many oil and gas companies there are here in Houston. Just look at http://www.subsea.org/company/allbycity.asp for a list of companies here in the Houston area. Many of these companies send workers overseas to places like Europe, Africa and Asia. It is known BP has employees in Algeria. One of the most under considered issues though when Houston workers are sent abroad is dental coverage and work.
First, let's acknowledge on point, dental care abroad is cheaper. Yet as, the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Yet the issue of cost is not usually the deciding factor on why many international workers come home to Houston to receive their dental care. Quality and personal service are both deciding factors when deciding what to do involving dental health care.
When a you have a dentist you have gone to for years, your just more comfortable still going to that same dentist, right? If your dentist knows you, your history and what you need done then it just makes sense to stay with that dentist. Personal care and services are something you should not have to sacrifice. Feeling comfortable that your getting the best care by a dentist you know and trust is a pleasant feeling.
The other deciding factor is the quality. "Overall health standards in many Asian and Latin American countries are well below those in the U.S. or Western Europe." (www.smartertravel.com/travel-advice/dental-or-medical-treatment-in-foreign-countries-good-idea.html?id=2630873) Say what you will about the United States health care system, The United States has some of the best dental standards in the world. In jobs where how you look matters almost as much as what you know, your dental health is not something to compromise.
So when does the international worker come home to Houston to get dental care? How does an international worker schedule dental work? We will cover these and other issues in our next blog.
